Lot 4556
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 16 mm, 2.69 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 325. CONSTA-NTINVS P Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTV-S AVG / ARLP Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 291 (for possible prototype). Good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex VAuctions E-Auction 309, 10 July 2014, 491 (part of).

The style is clearly unofficial, with a bust of Treveran style rather than of Arelate, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. Moreover, there are no official camp gates with two turrets and no doors or with a 'VIRTVS' legend.
